The WL software as of v5.4 is obviously starting to develop into a reasonably mature piece of software. But there are probably still plenty of new features that users might like to see or existing features made to work better.
This might be a good place to build up a list (or wishlist) of additions or changes to WL that people might like to see. I suspect that Davis will probably carry on their policy of focusing on the core features that WL provides, rather than adding endless peripheral bells and whistles, but within this focus of presenting the essential weather data it would be interesting to hear what aspects of WL people are currently dissatisfied with. What particular features would you like to see improved?

Great idea, John! My top wishlist items for WeatherLink would be for recording the date/time of occurrence for monthly and annual highs and lows, and a LOT more HTML tags, wind run data chief among them.

Gary, doesn't WL already do that. If you click on NOAA the monthly data comes up with the date and time of H/L temp and wind. Also right clicking the bulletin brings up the all time high and low data. Maybe you were thinking of something else. One thing I would like to see is on the plot screen is for the rain plot to display the total rain accumulated instead of jumping up and down with each new accumulation. Also maybe a little more user customization on the bulletin screen.

I guess I wasn't very clear. What I meant was HTML tags for the dates & times of the highs & lows, so they could be posted on the internet. Compared to most 3rd party software, Davis is very weak on quantity and quality of tags.

I know what I wish for, other than the winning Powerball numbers... To be able to export in tact the plots that weather link allows to be made. I would like to be able to insert these in for example, PowerPoint, or on a web page. Right now they are plt files, which can be exported but make no sense.
I also would like to be able to create my own gif files that weatherlink would be able to update and several variables as well.
Ok, another one here.. To be able to get historical data such as the daily or monthly maximum, minimum, average for the month for any of the things the station produces. Right now all we can get is the interval readings. Sorting these things out I do, but it would be nice to be able to get, for example the last 30 days of highest solar radiation values.
I think I will think some more on this

I like Weatherlink but there certainly are some shortcomings. I agree with Gary, there needs to be a lot more html tags to display extreme or record parameters. Other than the NOAA reports, which only record some, there is no way of knowing the date/time of a high or low once the year has passed. There could be an entire new lot of tags in the form: <!--recordhiMonthlyOutsideTemp--> <!--recordhiMonthlyOutsideTempDate--> <!--RecordhiMonthlyOutsideTempTime--> etc etc. As Gary mentions all the 3rd party software seems to be better in this respect and the information is certainly there to be captured by Weatherlink.
There needs to be tags for trends of all parameters e.g. <!--outsidetemptrend--> with associated options for time such as 1 hour, 12 hours, 24 hours.
Howabout tags for some of the existing reports such as bright sunshine and sunburn risk?
I would also like as an option, 2 min rather than 10 min wind average and air density to be able to be displayed in the World Standard Kg/m3 rather than lb/cu ft.
Total support for APRS would be nice, currently wind gust, rain in the last hour and rain in 24hr is not supported.
I live in a coatal environment and would like support for high and low tide. This can be obtained from moon phase data already available and after user custimisation should be accurate.

I thought of something else... WL 5.4 will allow one to see if the batteries in the console, iss, stations.. are "OK" I would like to see the voltage of the battery. I am reasoning that it could be "OK" at the bottom end of the "OK" readings and go belly up during the worst weather known to humankind. On a similar note, I would like to be able to list out the reception for each station. Right now, I can scroll through the console and get the percent transmission, but the WL seems to do the average. that might be nice to have.

on the various gifs for sensors, the ability to rename them.
Soil temp 1, soil temp 2 would be better if I could rename them as Soil temp 4 inch depth, or something similar.
Also that the summary html would be a jpg or gif and regenerated like WeatherDisplay and Ambient does.

My greatest wish of all is to hide the popup data transfer tags. I was hoping that WL5.5 would have that option, these popups are especially annoying since I update my site every minute.

Wishes? Plenty,
to start : Getting the promised documentation for the Expansion Interface.
I really would like to make use of the Expansion Interface to link the Vantage Pro 2 to my home automation to automate sunblinds, lawnsprinkler etc. I require the interface to send UDP messages with XML tags in it, lets say every couple of minutes or immediatly when alarm occurs.
Other features requested by email. No response.
Feature 1 : There are now 3 profiles for Data Upload. I really would like to have this increased to 5 or 6 to enable different periods in the graphs. I would like to have a day history, week, month and year history plus every minute the current information. Also would need another for FTP NOAA. This would require 6 Data Upload profiles.
Feature 2: A way to change the headers and other texts in the generated graphs. This to localize the language. It would be even better to have dual language, eg. the choice to have 2 gifs generated with language extension. Eg. barometer.gif and an alternative barometer_2.gif for the translated version.
The reason why I would like to change the header is also because I dont use the Soil2, 3 and 4 temperature for the soil, but for my wineceller and other temperature measurements.
I also have to report 2 problems I found :
Problem 1 :
<!--airDensity--> <!--airDensityUnit--> generates : Air Density 0.0812 lb/cu.ft The reading is not metric ! I have set all units at metric !
Problem 2 :
In certain conditions (negative outside temperature in Celcius?) I get the error : Error creating Air Density image. Check Sensors. I am certain that the sensors are OK, the problem is that the calculation fails?
Regards, Rob Roos

For whatever little it may be worth, I've submitted the lot of these suggestions to the Davis beta team. We'll see if anything gets incorporated...

It would be great if WeatherLink could also calculate the Powdery Mildew Disease Index (PM). That will make it so helpful for us farmers to plan our spraying program. Currently I am downloading from WeatherLink into an Excel spreadsheet and then generate the Index. It would be very simple programming to add it into WeatherLink, here is the formula:
The grape Powdery Mildew Disease Index is calculated by adding 20 each time there are at least six continuous hours during the day when the temperatures are between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. If there are less than six hours or if the maximum temperature in the canopy that day is greater than 95 degrees, then subtract 10 from the index. The disease index never exceeds 100 or goes below zero. If your index is at zero, the spray interval is doubled. From 10 to 30 tells you that powdery mildew is not doing well, and the spray interval can be lengthened. From 40-50 the interval is normal. Sixty and above means that powdery mildew is undergoing its lifecycle in five days. A short interval for sulfur dust is six days and a longer interval is 10 days.
I have brought this request to the support people at Davis several times at the Unified Wine Symposium in Sacramento and have also sent the formula to David but have not got any response so far...

From what I've heard it sounds like their software team may be a one man part time operation so changes are slow in coming.
I wonder if someone with programming ability could make an expansion module to calculate that?

Having only just started using WeatherLink 5.8.3 I'm not sure of all the functionality that is already available. Saying that I do have a couple of points. Would it be possible to change the background of the www.weatherlink.com/user/shrekattheswamp/ pages. Maybe have a selection of different designs available from drop down list in the setup part of the users account, or allow the user to upload their own background design. Have the option to use 24hr on the bottom of the time series displays. This could be added to the 'Select Units' dialog box. Have hot keys to zoom in on the time series plots. This is so you can scroll through the 1/4/8/12/24/72 hours view without having to move the mouse up to the top left of the display. Living by the sea I'd also like a plot for the tides. I could input the tidal parameters required for calculation to give me a graph. Share & Enjoy. Zippy.

There are many WL users outside the US who certainly would wish to be able translating tze text messages - forecast - barometer trend - moon phase
Doing the own weather page is easy even in your own language. We just have to translate the weather tags and to select the metric system. As long as the WL data is a number, we are fine. But above 3 fields are delivered in english text only. I did not find a table or a database where I can change these text messages into another langage.
The same is true for the gif-files. Beside that they are not really nice looking, we are locked with english text again.
This might be the reason why many Vantage Pro2 owners outside of the USA do not use WL but other compatible and more flexible software like Weather Display.
I'm confident that Davies can do better than version 5.8.3 and "overtake" it's competitors

It would be nice to have some WeatherLink software for Mac users that actually worked. Those of us now running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard (introduced Aug 2009) seem to have been left in the lurch. WL 5.0.4 does not work reliably with Snow Leopard, and nor does 5.1.0. No new features required, just the ability to function!
